Chapel Haven West The main building of the program contains apartments for the residents, classrooms, a community meeting room and office space. It is a few blocks from the University of Arizona- within walking distance - allowing our residents to attend classes, have access to University facilities, benefit from their state of the art Disability Resource Center and SALT Center, and pursue employment opportunities.
Chapel Haven West has Social Communicative Competence as its core component. With two speech and language pathologists on staff, students learn the appropriate interpretation and use of nonverbal language in a variety of settings. In addition, students enroll for two years in a college-level, credit-earning social communicative competency (SCC) class held on the campus of the University of Arizona and co-taught by our own staff and clinicians in the university’s Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Department. The course helps students with the concepts of social thinking and perspective-taking– how to establish and maintain relationships, problem solving, how to make social judgments and how to deal with communication breakdowns. Enrollment also gives our students many campus benefits: a student ID Cat card; the CatTran shuttle; campus email; library privileges; the recreation center; and discounted tickets for events. Some of Chapel Haven’s functional academic classes are held in classrooms on the campus. Our students enjoy sitting in on university classes and accessing facilities on the campus including the fitness center and the computer lab in the Disabilities Resource Center. Some of Chapel Haven’s functional academic classes are held in classrooms on the campus. Chapel Haven West helps students with vocational and academic pursuits. Staff help students acclimate to the more rigorous environment of university or community college life (versus high school) by assisting with the application and registration process, setting up accommodations and assistive technologies as needed, classroom support, and setting up tutoring services. Students receive a primer through Chapel Haven classes such as College Prep and Becoming a Master Student. An extensive Work-Study Program gives students vocational exposure through six-week job rotations based on students’ career interests. The program then assists students in pursuing meaningful competitive or supported employment. Mentor programs, vibrant recreational opportunities and volunteer opportunities round out the two-year program. Chapel Haven West provides a lifetime of support for its graduates and others who wish to access its services in the community.
