Moving Forward Towards Independence
Moving Forward Towards Independence Moving Forward Towards Independence is a nonprofit, residential program in beautiful Napa, CA committed to guiding our residents to achieve their highest potential. By providing an environment that maintains a balance of challenges and support, Moving Forward fosters growth in social, vocational and interpersonal skills. Working in partnership with residents and their families, we offer a caring and responsive community where young adults with disabilities can enjoy productive, fulfilling and healthy lives. “People like me, who have disabilities, have abilities, too”. It is this simple yet eloquent statement recently expressed by one of Moving Forward’s residents that beautifully captures much of what Moving Forward is about- - supporting young adults with severe learning disabilities, ADHD, high functioning autism, Aspergers or mild developmental disabilities to learn to live independently and to recognize their skills and the contributions they make to their communities. There is a concentrated focus at Moving Forward on community, both the community of individuals with disabilities who live near and with one another and the greater Napa community and the important role each citizen plays in that community. While at Moving Forward, residents participate in many activities: volunteer experience, life skill classes, jobs, community college, Special Olympics, recreational outings, and much more with an emphasis throughout on developing social skills and most importantly, friendships. One parent recently wrote, “Our son has been at Moving Forward for two years. He has a group of friends there which he has never had before. He has been allowed to grow and learn about being a responsible adult with thoughtful supervision of trained staff members.” Moving Forward is both a transitional and life-long program. There are two phases to the program with the first phase providing 24 hour supervision and a great deal of structure preparing the residents to move into their own homes/apartments in the community. During the second phase, residents live on their own or with roommates and receive 1:1 case management services as well as full access to all the group activities we provide.
