Pathway at UCLA Extension is a two-year certificate program for students with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, providing a blend of educational, social, and vocational experiences, taught and supervised by an expert staff sensitive to the individual needs of our students. On campus, Pathway students attend intimate-sized classes and participate with UCLA students in the many social, recreational, and cultural activities of a major university.
The Pathway curriculum is comprised of courses within the following skill-building areas:
EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT
Courses that provide a solid foundation in computer literacy, practical math, applied science, current events, the arts, and reading for work and pleasure. Students are encouraged to take advantage of UCLA’s activities and to participate in social, recreational, arts, and religious clubs and organizations.
LIFE SKILLS
Courses that cover health and hygiene, fitness, community orientation, personal finance, safe apartment living, nutrition and meal preparation, and social relationships, including building friendships, living and working with others, romantic relationships, and adult sexuality.
CAREER EXPLORATION AND WORK READINESS
Courses designed to develop career interests, workplace etiquette, and job application and interview skills. Practical experience is provided by on- and off-campus internships.
TRANSITION TO INDEPENDENT LIVING
Through a cooperative arrangement with a certified Independent/Supported Living agency, hands-on training guides students in making safe, healthy decisions that will prepare them for independent living in their home community.
